Years 11 & 12:
Studying for the VCE
As boys enter their final years of secondary school and prepare for their tertiary education or careers, Years 11 and 12 students undertake their VCE studies. The VCE Curriculum is set by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), and is composed of broad areas of knowledge called Key Learning Areas. Students can also complete VET (Vocational Education and Training) programs, gaining practical skills through off-campus study.
During these years, our Future Pathways Team ensures that boys have the tools, support and information they need to plan ahead and select the subjects that align with their aspirations for life after graduation.

Teaching Structure
The overarching care and guidance of each student’s academic development is the responsibility of their Tutor teacher and Head of House. These staff members also co-ordinate the Pastoral Care program for Years 11 and 12, focusing on preparing students for their exams, helping them to manage stress and workloads, and assisting in deciding their next steps.

In Year 11, the assessment of VCE subjects is completed internally by the school. In Year 12, boys complete a mixture of internal assessments and external exams administered by the VCAA.
To qualify for the VCE, a student must complete at least 16 Units, including at least three Units of English. At Scotch College, students usually study 20 Units throughout Years 11 and 12.
Academic Excellence Scholarships
Academic Excellence Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence across a broad range of disciplines.
These scholarships are awarded based on the results of an academic test, supporting documentation, and an interview with the Director of Extension Studies or delegate. Interviews may be held in person or online depending on location.
